One
of the things I enjoyed about reading the history of Joe Short and his brewery
was the daring move to take a few bottles of his homebrew into an established
brewery and ask for a job based on his homebrewing experience.
I think we are all happy that Joe was given a chance, otherwise he just
might have finished his Industrial Arts major. Since that time, he and his
crew have put in some serious work getting not only a pub up and running,
but also converting a former manufacturing facility into a craft beer production
facility. All while creating a 13-beer Imperial Series that put them on
the map. I am going to pay more attention to the actual beers this time
than I usually do because these are UN-usual recipes:
Abnormal Genius - High Gravity Golden Ale fermented with Sunflower
Seeds and Earthwork Honey Imperial Carob Stout - Brewed with Carob Imperial Black Cherry Porter Imperial Spruce India Pilsner - Brewed with Northern Michigan
Blue Spruce Needles and High Alpha Hops Peaches & Creme - A high gravity Golden Ale brewed
with Lactose and Fresh Peaches The Woodmaster - High gravity Brown Ale fermented with
Earthwork Maple Syrup and Toasted Pecans Bloody Beer - Fermented with Roma Tomatoes and spiced with
Peppercorns, Cherry Seed & fresh Horseradish and Dill Black Licorice Lager - Anise seed, Vanilla beans from Madagascar
and Chocolate Mint Leaves
There are so many crazy styles from Short's that I have to try...just to
say I did. The Key Lime Pie, PB & J Stout , Pistachio Cream Ale and Strawberry
Short's Cake are just a few. I love a brewery that thinks outside of the
box, as long as they at least get a few of them right.
